Best European Countries for Families
Reviewed by Susmit Paul Aranya, Founder, EuroTrip 365 · Last updated 2 October 2026
Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria and Spain are among the easiest European countries for families: compact distances, excellent trains, safe city centres and plenty to do for every age. Keep travel days short and book family rooms early.
Which countries work best with children?
Switzerland offers lakes, mountain trains and cable cars. The Netherlands has flat, walkable cities and parks. Austria combines Vienna's palaces with alpine scenery. Spain has long daylight hours, beaches and a relaxed meal culture.
How do I keep travel days short?
Limit transfers to three or four hours, base yourself in one hotel for day trips where possible, and avoid early-morning departures after late arrivals.
What about food for South Asian families?
Halal, vegetarian and Indian or Bangladeshi restaurants are available in most large European cities. We plan meal stops into family itineraries so you are never searching while children are hungry.
