Planning Your First Trip to Europe

Reviewed by Susmit Paul Aranya, Founder, EuroTrip 365 · Last updated 2 October 2026

For a first trip to Europe, choose three or four countries over 10–14 days, travel between them by train or coach, and start your visa preparation at least six to eight weeks before departure. Fewer countries and longer stays make for a better first trip than ticking off as many places as possible.

How many countries should I visit on my first trip?

Most first-time visitors try to fit in too much. Every change of city costs half a day for check-out, transfer and check-in. A good rule is two to three nights per city as a minimum.

Classic first routes combine France, Switzerland and Italy, or the Benelux countries with Paris. These have short distances, frequent trains and well-known sights.

How many days do I need?

Ten to fourteen days, plus travel days from South Asia, is comfortable for three or four countries. With seven days, focus on one or two countries.

What mistakes cost first-time travellers the most?

Booking non-refundable travel before the visa is issued, choosing hotels far from the centre to save money, and underestimating walking. Plan rest time into the schedule, especially when travelling with parents or children.

When should I start planning?

Three months ahead is ideal. Visa appointments can be scarce in peak season, and the itinerary and hotels you choose feed directly into your visa file.
