The Best Time to Visit Europe
Reviewed by Susmit Paul Aranya, Founder, EuroTrip 365 · Last updated 2 October 2026
May, June and September are generally the best months to visit Europe: long days, mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August. Winter is cheaper and suits Christmas markets and snow, but days are short.
What is peak season like?
July and August bring the warmest weather, the biggest crowds and the highest hotel prices, especially in Italy, Spain, France and Greece. Visa appointments are also harder to get.
Is spring or autumn better?
Both are excellent. Spring has flowers and fresher weather; early autumn often has warmer seas in the south and harvest season.
What about winter?
December has festive markets in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. January to March is the quietest period outside ski resorts.
When should I apply for my visa?
Start six to eight weeks before travel, and earlier for summer departures.
