Europe by Train: A Practical Guide
Reviewed by Susmit Paul Aranya, Founder, EuroTrip 365 · Last updated 2 October 2026
Trains are often the best way to travel between European cities: centre-to-centre, comfortable and scenic. Book high-speed and scenic trains in advance, travel with luggage you can lift yourself, and allow time to change stations in large cities.
Do I need to reserve seats?
High-speed trains in France, Spain and Italy, and some scenic routes, require reservations. Regional trains usually do not. Prices for fixed-time tickets generally rise closer to the date.
How should I handle luggage?
There is no porter service on most trains. Use one medium suitcase per person where possible. Luggage racks are at the end of carriages and above seats.
Which scenic routes are worth the extra time?
Swiss panoramic routes, the Brenner route between Austria and Italy and the Rhine Valley are popular. We advise which ones fit your itinerary and budget.
